Fresh Starts Aren’t Always Exciting (Sometimes They’re Just Brave)

This month, I relocated to Canberra.
And while fresh starts are often packaged as exciting - all possibility and new beginnings - I think the truth is usually a little more complicated than that.
Because sometimes, starting over in midlife doesn’t feel exciting.
Sometimes it just feels terrifying.
Sometimes it feels like standing at the edge of something you chose… while quietly wondering if you’ve lost your mind.
And I think that’s especially true in midlife.
When you’re younger, change can feel like adventure. There’s often a certain innocence to it. A belief that things will somehow work out. A little more energy, a little less to lose, and perhaps a little less understanding of just how disruptive life can be.
But starting over later in life can feel very different.
Because by this stage, many of us know exactly what change can cost.
We know that leaving something familiar can bring grief alongside possibility.
We know that uncertainty can feel deeply unsettling.
We know that fresh starts often come with practical realities, emotional upheaval, financial pressure, fatigue, responsibility, and a nervous system that doesn’t always love being stretched.
There’s no youthful naivety here.
Just open eyes.
And that, I think, is what makes it brave.
Sometimes Strength Looks Like Starting Over
Over the past few months, I’ve been making decisions that have scared me more than I’d like to admit.
Not because they were wrong.
But because they mattered.
And when something matters, there’s usually something at stake.
A version of your life you are leaving behind.
A routine you know.
A place that feels familiar.
An identity that made sense.
And perhaps most unsettling of all — the reality that there are no guarantees.
That’s the part people don’t always talk about when they speak about fresh starts.
Sometimes you don’t feel ready.
Sometimes you don’t feel confident.
Sometimes you don’t feel wildly inspired and empowered.
Sometimes you feel scared, exhausted, uncertain… and you take the next step anyway.
And I’m beginning to think that is strength.
When Change Feels More Vulnerable in Midlife
We often imagine strength as certainty.
Confidence.
A clear decision made with conviction and ease.
But in my experience, some of the deepest forms of strength look much quieter than that.
Strength can look like:
making a hard decision with shaky hands.
letting yourself grieve what you are leaving.
admitting you don’t know exactly how things will unfold.
feeling fear in your body and choosing the next step anyway.
Not because you are fearless.
But because something in you knows you can’t stay where you are.
Strength Doesn’t Always Look Like Confidence
This is true in life.
And it’s often true in movement too.
So many women I work with think strength should feel powerful all the time.
Like certainty.
Like pushing through.
Like confidence arriving first.
But often, it doesn’t.
Sometimes strength looks like showing up when your energy feels low.
Sometimes it looks like modifying.
Sometimes it looks like resting.
Sometimes it looks like trusting your body even when progress feels slow.
And sometimes…
it looks like beginning again.
Sometimes the Next Step Is Enough
If you are in a season of change right now - a move, a loss, a transition, a health shift, a relationship change, a new chapter that feels equal parts hopeful and terrifying - I just want to say this:
You do not have to feel completely ready to begin.
You do not need perfect certainty.
You do not need to feel fearless.
Sometimes strength is simply this:
knowing change is hard…
feeling what it asks of you…
and taking the next step anyway.
Quietly.
Honestly.
One step at a time.
And perhaps that is enough.
